Well the answer is that, just like my cat, none of them are human.
Facebook now has one billion users but new research suggests that one of ten of them are anything but human.
Most seem to be animals but increasing numbers of pets, companies, brands and even inanimate objects also have their own Facebook accounts
It is claimed that at least 100 million of Facebook’s ‘monthly active users’ are pets, brands and companies – and even Facebook founder Mark Zuckeberg’s dog Beast has its own page.
eMarketer, an internet market research company, says that only 889.3 million of Facebook’s one billion users are actually real people.
Other data from its report includes:
- the biggest growth in Facebook use is in India, Brazil, Russia, the Middle East and Africa.
- the U.S., UK and Western Europe are seeing a much slower growth in Facebook membership,
- in Western Europe as a whole only 37 per cent of people actively use the social networking site because people in France, Italy and Germany are less enthusiastic,
- Facebook use is predicted to grow from 42.6 per cent of internet users now to 54.7 per cent in 2017 and
- eMarketer estimates that 63 per cent of social network users worldwide will access Facebook at least once a month in 2013.
And, in case anyone is interested, this is a picture of my cat, who, by the way, does not have her own Facebook page.
