For some time now I have been more than a little bored with Facebook.
I have even touched on this subject on my personal blog and mentioned it to some friends online.
For me, Facebook has become too full of people I don’t really know posting the kind of crap I don’t really care about and inviting me to take part in games I have no interest in playing.
Put it like this, if I have ignored 100 requests to play Sword Quest or Words with Friends already, the chances are I won’t suddenly see the error of my ways with request number 101.
Now it seems I am far from alone.
I have just read that here in Britain more than 1.4million users have logged off Facebook in just one month.
According to independent data:
- in the last month there has been a 4.5 per cent fall in British users,
- in the last six months, Facebook has lost nearly 9million monthly visitors in the US and 2million in the UK,
- many of those who stay with Facebook are spending less time on the site than they previously did,
- experts say that as new social media sites grow, Facebook’s users are deserting the network.
New media specialist Ian Maude said people were quitting Facebook due to ‘a boredom factor’.
He said: “The problem is that, in the US and UK, most people who want to sign up for Facebook have already done it.
“People like to try something new. Is Facebook going to go the way of Myspace? The risk is relatively small, but that is not to say it isn’t there.”
People are also spending less time on Facebook. In the US, the average time spent on the site dropped from 121 minutes in December 2012, to 115 minutes in February, according to comScore.
Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg is said to be introducing new features in order to win members back and the company is working hard to appeal to younger Smartphone and tablet users.
The social media site says the apparent drop in the time spent on Facebook is due to people spending more time accessing the site via mobile devices rather than by sitting in front of their personal computers.
However not everyone is bored with Facebook:
- monthly visitors in Brazil were up six per cent in the last month to 70million while
- India has seen a four per cent rise to 64m.
