As rumors go, this one has been around for years and years…that Facebook is about to launch its own smartphone.
The social networking giant has always denied that the speculation is true but many pundits are speculating that the device is to be revealed shortly.
In fact we could learn about the new phone in just a few days time.
Facebook has issued press invitations to an event on Thursday in Menlo Park, California with the cryptic message: “Come see our new home on Android.”
It could mean that the Facebook phone will be announced…or of course it could mean something different entirely.
According to 9to5Google the event will be to launch a new mobile device.
It claims we are going to see:
- A smartphone with HTC hardware
- A device featured more on a lifestyle brand rather than on the hardware or softeware
- an ad campaign launching shortly and
- that one of the tag lines for the new product will be “more than just an app.”
The website said: “Sources who have seen the Facebook/HTC smartphone hardware in-person say it is reminiscent of an iPhone.
“It includes an iPhone-like “home button” on the bottom center, and this button is surrounded by horizontal function keys on the right and left side.”
There have been rumors about the Facebook phone since at least September 2010 when TechCrunch wrote: “…the social network is working on a top secret project to build software that powers a smartphone.”
Could it be that this rumor is finally going to be put to bed?
